AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) AND ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVE DISORDER (ADHD) IN PREMATURE INFANTS WITH INTRAVENTRICULAR HEMORRHAGE (IVH)
Introdução
Survival of babies born prematurely has increased in recent years. This has resulted in an increase in the incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Objetivo
This study evaluates the long-term risk of ASD and ADHD in premature babies born weigh < 1,500 g who have an intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) on ultrasound (US) and correlate this risk with grade of IVH.
Método
This retrospective cohort included 452 patients followed at Outpatient Child Neurology Service for neurodevelopment at a tertiary hospital between 2015 and 2024.
Resultados
We identified 104/452 patients (23%) that had IVH. Among these, 59/104 patients (56%) had grade I, 21/104 (20%) grade II, 16/104 (15%) grade III and 8/104 (7%) grade IV. From 104 that had IVH, 20 patients were lost during follow-up at early stages, preventing further analysis of their potential development of ADHD or ASD. Out of 84 remaining patients, 9/84 (10,7%) were classified with ASD and 16/84 (19%) with ADHD. When considering all the patients, with and without IVH, 15 patients had ASD and 33 patients had ADHD. Therefore, among 15 patients with ASD, 9 (60%) had history of IVH, while out of 33 patients with ADHD, 16 (48,5%) had IVH.
Conclusão
This study highlights the importance of long-term follow-up for preterm infants, especially those with a history of IVH, given the increased risk of ADHD and ASD in this pediatric population.
