EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF EPILEPSY HOSPITALIZATIONS IN CHILDREN UNDER 10 YEARS OF AGE IN PARA STATE, BRAZIL, BETWEEN 2013 AND 2023
Introdução
Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterized by a predisposition to the generation of seizures. Its manifestation encompasses a series of clinical conditions characterized by transient alterations in consciousness and behavior, whose observational historical is used in the diagnosis. Although an etiological agent can be identified, around half of cases the cause is unknown. In children, the incidence of epilepsy is highest in the first year of life and decreases after 10 years of age, which implies neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences of seizure crises.
Objetivo
The present study aims to determine the epidemiological overview of pediatric hospital admissions due to epilepsy in the State of Pará, Brazil.
Método
This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional and quantitative study, using data from the Information Technology Department of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The analysis included the number of hospitalizations reported in the State of Pará in the period from 2013 to 2023. The main variables encompassed were sex, color/race, nature of care, health region and age (0 - 9 years).
Resultados
Between January/2013 and December/2023, 4347 hospitalizations for epilepsy were recorded in Pará in pediatric patients, with an increase from 327 in 2013 to 487 in 2023. The health region (RIC) with the highest prevalence of occurrences was Araguaia (16.33%). Males were the most affected gender, with 2445 hospitalizations (56.25%). The age group from 1 to 4 years old had the highest prevalence, with 2174 cases (50.01%). Mixed race represented the majority of cases, with 2897 hospitalizations (66.64%), followed by 1299 cases without notification of color/race. There were 29 elective consultations, in contrast to 4318 urgent cases.
Conclusão
The study concluded that pediatric hospitalizations due to epilepsy represent a significant health problem in the state of Pará, Brazil. The Araguaia health region recorded the highest number of cases. The epidemiological profile is characterized by boys, being of mixed race, especially in the age group of 1 to 4 years, leading the number of hospitalizations. The majority of hospitalizations were urgent in nature, highlighting the need for preventative measures and enhanced healthcare strategies to manage epilepsy in this vulnerable population.
