KNOWLEDGE LEVEL ABOUT STROKE IN ADOLESCENTS AT SOUTHERN BRAZIL
Introdução
Stroke is the second most common cause of death worldwide and the leading cause of death in Brazil. Stroke is a health issue that primarily affects adults but has been increasing among younger individual.
Objetivo
To assess the level of knowledge about stroke among students from public and private high schools in Cascavel City, at Western region of Paraná, South Brazil.
Método
Interventional observational study conducted with adolescents students attended at high schools, which filled a questionnaire with objective questions about stroke. Aged from 14 to 17 years old. After the first data collection, lectures were given to participants in classroom from each school. The lectures were about stroke pathophysiology, risk factors, main signs and symptoms, prevention, and how to respond to an acute stroke scenario.
Resultados
831 adolescents in the first data collection and 784 in the second data collection filled the questionnaire. In this research was observed that in the first data collection, students from private schools had more knowledge about stroke risk factors compared to students from public schools (60.5% x 45.8%). However, both groups showed similar knowledge regarding warning signs (64.9% and 61.2%, respectively). In the second data collection, knowledge about risk factors and symptoms increased among students from public (75.2% and 75.8%) and private schools (83.3% and 87%). In the first collection, stress was the most identified risk factor in both public and private schools (69% and 77.2%), and dizziness was the most recognized symptom by students (68.1% in public and 75.9% in private). In the second collection, family history of stroke was the most noted risk factor among students, and slurred speech was the most noted symptom (89.4% in public schools and 96.4% in private).
Conclusão
Students from private schools demonstrated better knowledge about stroke compared to students from public schools. It was also evident that there was an improvement in knowledge about stroke among students from both, public and private schools, after the lectures and distribution of informational pamphlets about the disease. Therefore, it was concluded that stroke education campaigns targeting high school students can yield favorable outcomes.
